"The La Amistad coffee must have a good reputation.  I just received an e-mail from the mother of a student I took to Costa Rica two years ago...she ordered 25 bags plus she wants me to change [our] website so her friends can more easily contact me about ordering.

Indeed, you guys have created a win, win, win, win fundraiser."

        travel to a developing nation
     - For a community or school-based project that raises

awareness of sustainability in your area
     - As a gift in your group's name, in the form of much

needed school supplies, to one of two communities in

Costa Rica (The Selva Verde Learning Center in Sarapiqui                  or Manzanilla, the town closest to the La Amistad coffee farm)

or a community in the nation you will be visiting.

It's not too late to start! Most Spring fundraisers are
just kicking off now!!

CHAMPLAIN VALLEY UNION HIGH SCHOOL REDEFINES A "GOOD" FUNDRAISER!

There are those fortunate and enviable groups that truly don't have a personal need for a fundraiser but, as educator Dave Ely and 36 students from Champlain Valley Regional High School (CVUHS) in Vermont discovered this Fall, fundraising with others in mind opens up a whole new world to the potential good a fundraiser can have for others, while teaching valuable lessons for its participants.

With the resounding success of a $4150 fundraiser, all of the CVUHS proceeds are being donated to the Sarapuqui Community Learning Center in Costa Rica - a location they will be visiting with Holbrook Travel this coming Spring.

"We purchased two new computers for the center," said Ely, "and donated  money to support the reforestation project, school ecology clubs, after school program, single mother program, and the general fund there.  When we visit in April  we will bring with us a large supply of school and art supplies for the center and for area schools."

For us here at Cafe Humana, this sort of synergy represents the zenith of what our fundraisers can accomplish. There can be so much more to fundraising than simply raising funds. By thinking outside the box, your group can have a rare oppotunity to internalize some hard-to-come-by life lessons on the immense, intrinsic value of philanthropy and altruism in a world too often full of "me" and "I".

" I strongly encourage other groups to consider similar
fundraisers" adds Dave. " It's really nice to be able to give a little something back to the Costa Rican people and their environment.  Little pluses ultimately add up to a big plus for them and for us.  Obviously, you can raise money by selling candy or pizzas but it's just  not the same.  My students knew that each bag sold would help the farmers and the environment there."

Our warmest regards and thanks go out to Dave and every one of his 36 students and group chaperones. There's is an extraordinary and exemplary effort with lessons and benefits that are sure to last at least one lifetime for his group and those they will visit in Costa Rica.

Not going to Costa Rica you say? How about a local environmental organization? A local shelter? Help save a local creek or restore a watershed. The options are as endless as the opportunities to improve our environment or help our fellow global citizens.

As Mr Ely so perfectly puts it, " I've taught for 34 years and it never fails to amaze me how much our youth, when given the opportunity, embrace the idea of being their global brothers' and sisters' keepers."

Thanks, Dave. We needed that!

Earth Day Events and Cafe Humana - Perfect Together!!

Don't miss out on your local communities Earth Day celebration to use a fundraising platform for your coffee and chocolate! It is an event packed with the ideal customer for your efforts and entry is usually free or very inexpensive. Serve coffee by the cup for amazing profits per bag (check for local regulations) and to give people an opportunity to try before they buy. Take the time to make some great signs with clear messaging about what you are selling and raising funds for and you'll do great!
